Outgoing Mayor Mel Norton doesn’t have a lot of time left in office but is vowing to get the Irving Oil headquarters building back on track.
The proposal is being appealed to the provincial Planning Appeal Board. The former President of the Saint John Real Estate Board, Jason Stephen says the city is at a crossroads and needs new development uptown to generate additional tax revenue and ease the pressure on property owners.
The city’s former heritage planner, Jim Bezanson decided to file the appeal and vows he’s not against progress.
Bezanson says he’s disappointed mayoral candidates are arguing for the building to be constructed, as proposed, even though it doesn’t adhere to the city’s bylaw.
