Possible Nursing Home Cuts Topic Of Controversy For Charlotte County

The Concerned Citizens of Charlotte County sounding the alarm over healthcare.

Co-chair of the group, John Gardner says they are worried about what might be happening in nursing homes, “There are some cuts to nursing homes that are really going to have a very negative effect on residents. These are the people who can least afford to take another hit.”

Gardner says at this point in time, it’s costing under $3 a day to feed a senior, which he says is pretty meager.

He adds that nursing homes are buying their food in bulk, but notes that only goes so far before the quality of the food begins to suffer.

In response, MLA for Charlotte-Campobello, John Ames says right now, they are only having discussions on ways to find efficiencies, “Unfortunately, there’s been a lot of incorrect information over nursing homes, and the services that are increasingly being put out there in the public domain. There has been no reductions for this coming fiscal year in regards to food budgets. None at all.”

Ames says there are all kinds of opportunities for the Department of Social Development to have with the New Brunswick Association of Nursing Homes.

He also notes that many successful collaborative projects to find efficiencies have been initiated by the Association in the past, and he says the provincial government will help in any way it can.
