A Common Time Of Year For Moose Sightings

There have been several moose sightings in the region recently.

The large animal has wandered out of the woods and into residential areas.

There were reports of two in Riverview and another in Dieppe this week.

Moose Biologist Dwayne Sabin says you need to remember that moose can weigh up to a thousand pounds, “They are a wild animal and they are unpredictable and it is best to stay away, in cases where there is a public safety concern. You are best to call the Energy and Resource Development to let us know, so we can deal with the situation.”

Sabin says it’s not unusual at this time of year for moose to be spotted outside of wooded areas, “They will wander into an urban or suburban area over night when it is quiet and dark, but then they get very agitated in the morning, but there is more ample opportunity for us to move back to a more wooded area.”

He says if there is no easy way to move the animal out of the area, they will use tranquilizer darts, or they may have to euthanize the moose, “But sometimes it may take five or ten minutes or even longer for the animal to lose consciousness. In that time they could panic and run a long way. Immobilization is something we can use when it is in a contained area.”

This is also the time of year that they record the largest number of moose being struck on highways.
