A Fredericton cybersecurity expert welcomes the addition of a new trunk radio system for Saint John.
Police channels will be encrypted meaning everyone can’t listen to the calls police officers are responding to or know their location.
David Shipley of Beauceron Security has concerns are about the irresponsible use of scanners by non-media meaning people on social media tweeting things out who do not have media training and how that information could impact first responders.
He refers to the terrible tragedy in Moncton and he says having open communication over the air if someone were to do the same thing in Saint John, it’s just dangerous for the officers
In December, Common Council approved a new trunk radio system with encrypted police channels in the 2018 budget at a price tag of nearly $4 million dollars.
