A Tiny Blast At A.I.M. Rattles Saint Johners

It’s a deja vu of sorts and not a good one.

A day after an explosion at the Irving Oil refinery, there was a much smaller event on the west side of the port at the American Iron and Metal Recycling facility. There was another explosion at this facility in mid-September.

In a statement, A spokesperson for A.I.M tells CHSJ News the noise heard yesterday came from a contained single burst of pressure following the shredding of some material.

Mayor Don Darling tells us he met with Port officials recently and describes the timing of this event as “adding insult to injury”.

“We are just coming off a major event yesterday and now we’re having impact blasts. Ok. So now they’re just impact blasts. I think that conversation isn’t over, we’re going to be engaging soon with A.I.M. as well.”

A statement from Port Saint John says they continue to take this matter very seriously and are in the process of working with A.I.M. to develop robust protocols in terms of communication with appropriate officials and the public.
