It’s been one year since the YMCA’s Newcomer Connections program, the city of Saint John and volunteers helped resettle hundreds of Syrian refugees.
YMCA President & CEO Shilo Boucher says they seem to be settling in well.
Boucher says they’re learning the English language and a lot of them are enrolled in programs at the YMCA.
Some of the newcomers have, or are considering, moving to bigger cities because they have family there, but Boucher says there’s also been secondary migration here in Saint John because they hear about how great it is.
She says that’s something the Y Newcomer Connections program is really proud of.
Roughly 70 of the newcomers have secured jobs and another 120 are still looking for work.
