Apartment Fire Forces Several People From Their Home

No one was hurt after a fire damaged an apartment building in Saint John on Sunday evening.

Fire crews were called to a three-storey building at 117-121 Prince Edward Street around 9:40 p.m.

Platoon Chief Steve Voutour said they were initially told three to five people, including children, were inside the building.

Voutour said Monday morning that they all made it out unharmed before firefighters arrived on the scene.

“We were able to confirm that everybody was out of the structure and the bulk of the fire was extinguished rather quickly,” said Voutour, adding it took crews about two hours to completely put out the fire.

Voutour said the fire was located in the kitchen of the second-floor apartment at 117 Prince Edward Street.

The Canadian Red Cross provided overnight accommodations for six to eight people in the three units of that building. The tenants of the three units at 121 Prince Edward Street were able to return home Sunday night.

Voutour said the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
