Another Policy 409 discussion begins at Morna Heights Elementary School on Thursday night.
The kindergarten to Grade 5 school, like many in the region, has decreasing enrolment with around 70 students, ongoing water quality issues and building problems.
District Education Council chair Rob Fowler says they previously suggested closing Morna Heights Elementary, Inglewood School and Grand Bay Primary in favour of a new building but that idea never moved forward.
Fowler doesn’t think the new building option is viable anymore given the low numbers of students but, some west side schools have room.
“So the children from Morna could be moved out of that building and into the west side schools and then we’ll have to do something separate from the Morna proposals for the Grand Bay Primary and Inglewood schools,” Fowler said.
Fowler feels this school may feel it’s being picked up because it’s the third time they have looked at over the last decade but, the reality is the numbers are dropping, buildings are getting older and cost to maintain them are going up.
The public meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. at Morna Heights Elementary School.
It’s the first of three meetings included in the Policy 409 process and Fowler says the next meeting will be in six to seven weeks.
