Atlantic Red Cross On Standby To Help In Fort McMurray

The Atlantic chapter of the Canadian Red Cross says crews are on standby to help aid people affected by wildfires in Fort McMurray.

Spokesperson Dan Bedell says he expects to hear from his colleagues in Alberta sometime over the next 24 hours.

He says they’ve already started fundraising efforts.

“Homes have already been destroyed, people have already lost things. There’s needs for emergency shelter, heating, clothing, food and other personal requirements.”

Bedell says more than 70,000 people have been evacuated from over a dozen communities.

Conditions are expected to get worse with dry weather and high winds in the Fort McMurray forecast.

You can also donate to the Red Cross by texting REDCROSS to 30333.

Nova Scotia’s Opposition Leader, Jamie Baillie also offering his support for families in Fort McMurray.
