If you’re heading out to a party to ring in the New Year on Tuesday night, MADD Canada wants you to remember to plan your way home before heading out.
A safe ride home for those who have a drink or two includes a designated driver, calling a cab or spending the night.
A spokesperson for the advocacy group says hundreds of Canadians are killed and tens of thousands are injured in crashes involving alcohol, cannabis and/or other drugs each year.
It says all of those tragedies are 100 per cent preventable.
If you’re out and notice a driver you think is impaired, you should call 911.
If you’re hosting a New Years’s Eve bash, you can help prevent impaired drivers from hitting the road.
MADD Canada says as a party host, you have several options.
This may include having lots of food and non-alcoholic beverages available, monitoring how much your guests are consuming and being prepared to have guests spend the night.
The group also suggests having taxi numbers available and to stop serving alcohol long before the party ends.
As an added incentive not to drink and drive, police will be out watching for those who chose to ignore the warnings.
