Bear spray incidents on the rise in Saint John

Police in Saint John are warning the public after an increase of incidents involving bear spray in recent weeks.

Police have responded to multiple incidents where individuals were intentionally sprayed, often during disputes.

Bear mace or spray is a protective tool against aggressive wildlife. The powerful chemical irritant is dangerous when used on humans. Exposure can cause significant pain, breathing difficulties and long-term injury.

It’s a criminal offence to deploy a noxious substance such as bear spray at another person.

Police are asking the public report any incidents involving a noxious substance like bear spray, and to exercise caution if such a substance is used.
