Body Recovered Near Mactaquac Dam

Mounties have recovered a body from the Saint John River near the Mactaquac Dam, west of Fredericton.

Const. Hans Ouellette said they received a report of a missing man shortly after 4 p.m. Wednesday.

Ouellette said it is believed the man was cliff jumping in the area at the time he went missing.

The man surfaced after entering the water but appeared to be struggling, he said.

According to Ouellette, a witness tried to help the man, but he went under the water and did not resurface.

Local fire departments began searching the area using boats and RCMP divers recovered the man’s body Thursday morning.

Ouellette said they are working to confirm the man’s identity and contact his next of kin. An autopsy will be performed to determine the cause of death.
