Byelections Announced For 2 Miramichi-Area Ridings

Voters in two New Brunswick ridings will be heading to the polls later this spring to elect their provincial representatives.

Byelections in Southwest Miramichi-Bay du Vin and Miramichi Bay-Neguac will be held on June 20.

Premier Blaine Higgs announced the byelection date in a news release Friday morning.

“This date was chosen with the health and safety of the voters and workers in mind given the waves of COVID-19 we are experiencing this winter,” Higgs said in the release.

Residents in those ridings have been without representation in the provincial legislature since last August.

Southwest Miramichi-Bay du Vin Progressive Conservative MLA Jake Stewart and Miramichi Bay-Neguac Liberal MLA Lisa Harris resigned and ran against one another in last summer’s federal election.

Stewart defeated Harris by just over 1,400 votes to become the next MP for Miramichi-Grand Lake.

The Progressive Conservatives currently hold 26 seats in the legislature, the Liberals hold 16 seats, the Greens hold three seats, People’s Alliance hold two seats and two seats are vacant.
