Canada Revenue Agency Reminding People To Be Wary Of Tax Season Scams

Since tax season is here, the Canada Revenue Agency is reminding people to be very careful about people pretending to work for them.

Spokesperson Desmond Arsenault says a fairly common scam is emails, phone calls, or text messages from someone claiming to work for the CRA.

“Be aware that we would never ask for credit card information, bank account numbers, passport information,” says Arsenault. “And we would certainly never threaten you with things such as jail time.”

Arsenault says if you are suspicious you should hang up, and call the CRA directly.

Additionally, you should report any contact by scammers to the RCMP or Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
