Cross-border travel continues to decline.
Statistics Canada says Canadian travel to the United States was down 29.7% in August, while the number of visits to Canada by Americans decreased 1.4%.
Statistics Canada notes that for the third time since June 2006, more U.S. residents made trips to Canada than Canadians made to the United States.
Canadian-resident return trips from the United States by automobile declined by 32.6% to 2.2 million in August 2025
Many Canadians opted for travel overseas, with the number of Canadians returning increasing by 9.2% over the year before.
More than 3.2 million U.S. resident trips to Canada were recorded this August.
It marked the seventh consecutive month to record a decline over 2024.
About two-thirds of that travel was made by automobile, which is 3.2% lower than the number in August 2025.
Canadians made 2.2 million trips to the United States by vehicle, marking a 32.6% decrease.
Statistics Canada offers no reasons for the declines, although the lower Canadian dollar and the trade dispute between the two countries, which has led to some travellers boycotting cross-border travel, are seen as contributing factors.
Canada did see more Americans disembarking from cruise ships, with over 330,800, representing a 7% increase from the same time period last year.
