Cassidy Lake Leakage Could Pose Risk To Wells and Aquifers

Leaking saltwater brine from the tailings pond at Cassidy Lake has some people worried about the potential of local wells getting contaminated.

The pond is near the site of the former mine in Cassidy Lake which ceased operations in the late 1990s. PotashCorp says its working to remediate the leak and the Marine Coordinator with the Conservation Council Matt Abbott tells CHSJ News there are risks, especially if the temperature or salt content of the leaked water difffers greatly from the water receiving it.

Abbott says it’s the job of the provincial Environment Department to oversee the cleanup and minimize the risk to wells and aquifers.
