Charity of the Week: Avenue B

There are many charities in Saint John and the surrounding area. You’ve probably heard some of their names, but may not know exactly what they do. Each week, we’ll highlight a different organization, sharing who they are and the work they do. We’ll also let you know about any upcoming events where you can learn more or get involved.

This week’s Charity of the Week is Avenue B.

At Avenue B, we believe in meeting people where they are, empowering them with the tools and knowledge to make informed choices, and creating an inclusive, non-judgmental environment for all. Together, with the support of our community partners, we strive to reduce harm, promote health, and foster hope.

Mission

To improve health outcomes and reduce HIV, Hep C, and other STBBIs by meeting people where they are, delivering compassionate, nonjudgmental, evidence-based harm reduction services, and empowering individuals and communities through education and collaboration.

Ongoing Programs

  • Community Education: We partner with educational institutions, community groups, and social service agencies to deliver workshops and resources on HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis C, STBBIs, and harm reduction strategies.
  • Naloxone Training: We offer life-saving naloxone training for both individuals and organizations, equipping participants with the knowledge and skills to prevent opioid overdose deaths.
  • Support Services: We offer tailored assistance to individuals living with or at risk of HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis C, and/or STBBIs, connecting them with the care and resources they need.
  • Needle Distribution Services (NDS): Our needle exchange program helps reduce the incidence of HIV/AIDS, HepatitisC, and STBBIs by providing safe supplies and fostering safer practices.
  • Street Outreach: Our team actively engages with the community in Waterloo Village, offering resources, support, and harm reduction tools to those who need them.
  • Needle Disposal: In partnership with local organizations, we install and maintain street-level needle disposal boxes to improve public safety and cleanliness.
  • On-Site Healthcare: Our on-site Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) provides wound care and basic nursing support to meet immediate healthcare needs.
  • Drug Testing Services: We utilize a spectrometer machine for drug testing, allowing individuals to better understand the composition of substances and make informed choices.

Space to create, connect, and just be

Creative Corner offers clients a chance to step outside of survival mode and engage in creative expression through art and writing. These sessions create space for people to explore, reflect, and connect, without pressure or expectation.

What is Creative Corner

Creative Corner is a low-barrier, client-focused initiative that provides opportunities for creativity, self-expression, and connection. Through guided and self-directed activities, participants can engage in art and writing in a relaxed, supportive environment. No experience is needed, just a willingness to show up.

Weekly Sessions

Creative Corner offers regular opportunities to participate:

  • Mondays 1-3PM: Creative writing sessions (journaling, storytelling, reflection)
  • Tuesdays 1-3PM: Art sessions (drawing, painting, creative projects)

Participants are free to engage in whatever way feels right for them.

  • Krista has worked for Country 94 since Jan 2015 and is currently your host for the LIVE ON THE DRIVE with Krista, Monday through Friday 3-6 pm. What does Krista love about country music? EVERYTHING! She loves interviewing artists like Dean Brody, Tim Hicks, Lindsay Ell, going to concerts and dancing in the control booth on King St.

If you ask Krista her ABSOLUTE FAVOURITE thing, though, about country radio, the answer is the connection with you, the listener. The friendships made over the years with our listeners is second to none.
