Charity of the Week: Saint John Community Food Basket

There are many charities in Saint John and the surrounding area. You’ve probably heard some of their names, but may not know exactly what they do. Each week, we’ll highlight a different organization, sharing who they are and the work they do. We’ll also let you know about any upcoming events where you can learn more or get involved.

This week’s Charity of the Week is the Saint John Community Food Basket.

Our History:

The Saint John Community Food Basket was the first food bank in the city and is often a distribution centre for Saint John’s four other food banks. This beacon to the less fortunate was started by four committed individuals in 1984 and has grown to involve more than sixty people. Over time, the need for our service has increased, not decreased. To accommodate that need and to continue distribution to the other food banks, we moved to a new facility with twice the space.

Our Mission:

Through education, advocacy and the acquisition, storage and distribution of food, we hope to anticipate and meet the needs of the hungry in our community in a manner that maintains dignity, builds community and challenges inequality.

Our Values:

PRIVACY. DIGNITY. RESPECT. The Food Basket has embedded these values into our established policies, procedures and practices.

Food Donations:

If you are considering a food donation, we are often in need of the following items:

  • Cereal
  • Sugar and sweetener
  • Instant coffee and tea
  • Juice boxes or sports drinks
  • Condiments
  • Canned meats such as ham, chicken and turkey
  • Canned seafood
  • Baby food
  • Meal supplements such as protein bars

Due to storage limitations, we request donations of non-perishable food items only. Call 1-506-652-2707 for our current high-priority food requests.

  • Krista has worked for Country 94 since Jan 2015 and is currently your host for the LIVE ON THE DRIVE with Krista, Monday through Friday 3-6 pm. What does Krista love about country music? EVERYTHING! She loves interviewing artists like Dean Brody, Tim Hicks, Lindsay Ell, going to concerts and dancing in the control booth on King St.

If you ask Krista her ABSOLUTE FAVOURITE thing, though, about country radio, the answer is the connection with you, the listener. The friendships made over the years with our listeners is second to none.
