With the province facing a massive debt — and overspending issues — is shale gas the answer for New Brunswick?
Conservative candidate Curtis Malloch says they have a plan in place to grow a shale gas industry adding a set of stringent rules are in place and he feels they are ready to move ahead and get our young people back.
The Green Party can see no good coming from shale gas. Candidate Derek Simon says it’s a lose-lose situation.
He says shale gas is an example of a resource industry that will benefit shareholders that do not live here.
Liberal John Ames tells us we need to take a balanced approach saying it has to be safe and we have to make sure we are being paid adequately for our resources.
NDP Candidate June Greenlaw says they are saying no to shale gas right now — because they don’t believe it meets the requirements they want for any natural resource project. She says they have to make sure it can be done safely for people and the environment and can it make sufficient money for the province.
The People’s Alliance think shale gas can be done safely — but the decision to go forth should be in New Brunswicker’s hands.
Candidate Joyce Wright says provincial governments have continually failed in three areas of resource development: enforcing regulations, protection for land owners, and adequate royalties. Wright says we can’t give the farm away.
