Pleasure boat owners have struggled to use Market Slip in recent years due to a build-up of silt.
That may be about to change after the city and Port Saint John reached an agreement to dredge the slip.
Councillor Gary Sullivan tells CHSJ News what the agreement involves.
“The city would pay for the initial dredging and I think help look after some of the permits and some of the paperwork that goes along with it,” Sullivan says,
“and then the Port will look after it for the next 12 years.”
Item 5.9 on Tuesday’s Common Council Agenda is an agreement with Saint John Port for Dredging at Market Square. Should it pass, dredging will take place this summer and the area would be fully functional for the summer of 2019. :-). #SaintAwesome just became #SaintAwesomer pic.twitter.com/s1i29hXt0W

The initial dredging is expected to cost about $142,000 and would happen this summer.
Sullivan says they’ve wanted to dredge Market Slip for several years but didn’t have the money to go it alone.
Council will consider the agreement at their meeting tomorrow night.
