A small parking lot surcharge would be one way to update Saint John’s ailing public transportation system: Common Councillor David Merrithew put forward that idea at the most recent meeting of common council.
He tells CHSJ News it would be a small monthly surcharge, and since parking and transit have always gone hand-in-hand it seems to him like an excellent fit.
On the other hand, Common Councillor Bill Farren cautions we need to be careful not to hurt small businesses in the uptown by making it more expensive to park.
Both the Parking and Transit Commissions have been asked to look at the idea and determine what sort of surcharge would be feasible.
