City To Examine Role Of Crossing Guards

It costs the city $217,000 annually to employ 5-7 crossing guards on streets near our schools–and while there’s no doubt we need to keep walking conditions safe for students, question are being raised about whether there’s a cheaper options by Common Councillor Susan Fullerton.

At the most recent meeting of Common Council, Fullerton queried whether the city is mandated to pay for crossing hards.

It turns out the city is responsible for paying for crossing guards in the places where we decide to have them. Mayor Mel Norton tells CHSJ News the city is reviewing where the service is necessary and where it’s not, with an ultimate eye to keeping roadways safe for students.

The results of that report will be back by late this year or early next.
