Common Council wants to meet with the local Liberal M-L-A’s to talk about the city’s priorities and how the provincial government can help bring them to fruition.
City Manager Pat Woods, who’s leaving, says one thing that would benefit Saint John is to revamp the Municipalities Act. He calls the current legislation, which is 40 years old, antiquated and is holding Saint John and other cities back from being able to generate the revenue they need to operate properly.
Woods says other provinces allow their cities to have more autonomy and the fact Saint John has to depend on more than 20 million dollars in unconditional funding from the provincial government is a sign of vulnerability.
