A sampling of the candidates running to be the member of parliament for Saint John-Rothesay debating climate change at UNB Saint John on Thursday night.
Independent Stuart Jamieson, Green candidate Ann McAllister, the NDP’s Armand Cormier and Liberal incumbent Wayne Long talked about single-use plastics, flooding, protecting water and wilderness and toxic substances.

Patrick Hickey, president of the students’ representative council, thinks they had a good debate on the environment.
“Of course, we are disappointed that the Conservative member and the People’s Party member declined to attend our event. We would have liked to hear what they had [ to say] about the environment and to have all the voices at the table as we would with any debate.” Hickey said.

PC candidate Rodney Weston, People’s Party candidate Adam Salesse and Independent candidate Neville Barnett did not take part in the debate.

The audience in the Whitebone Lounge at UNB Saint John laughed when as moderator J.P. Lewis asked a question about single-use plastics, bottled water was being handed to the candidates.
The student’s representative council at UNB Saint John hosted the debate as part of the Get Out The Vote campaign to encourage voting among students.
SRC president Patrick Hickey said they were also able to partner with 100 Debates on the Environment.
“100 debates going on at the same time on the same night all about environmental issues which we think is a very important issue especially for students,” Hickey said.
