The Canadian Coast Guard is doing away with men’s and women’s uniforms.
According to Coast Guard Minister Bernadette Jordan, the change won’t actually look different at all, “While we’re calling it a switch, it’s more an of relabeling as we will move away from gender-specific terms in favour of size and fit” she said.
Minister Jordan says the move is a way of making people more comfortable as they serve in the Coast Guard.
“It’s part of our commitment to making government workplaces more inclusive and you can expect to see more and more departments making moves like this in the future.
The Coast Guard has updated its uniform policies a few times in recent years to become more inclusive. Most recently they launched a maternity line of their uniforms so women could continue to work whilst pregnant. They also recently adopted an official hijab and turban that qualify as appropriate headwear for military personnel.
The Coast Guard is hoping to have the new uniform system in place by Winter 2022.
