Common Council Declines Offer For City To Buy Historic Sydney Street Courthouse

Common Council declining an offer from the province for the city to buy the historic Sydney Street courthouse along with a remote property but it was not unanimous with councillor Susan Fullerton voting against the motion.

Fullerton says the vacant old courthouse is one of our most historic buildings and she believes it wouldn’t be expensive to keep the building in mothballs. Fullerton says though they don’t have a use for it she doesn’t want it to fall into private hands or the wrecking ball.

Councillor Ray Strowbridge says councillor Fullerton knows just as well as anyone else that we’ve got enough buildings here that we can’t take care of. Councillor Shirley McAlary says if we don’t have a need for it, we can’t afford it and we’ve already got vacant buildings in the city we’ve paid a big price for.

The Sydney Street courthouse was built in the 1820s and is a national historic site.
