Common Council Looks To Eliminate Illegal Parking Lots Uptown

Common Council brainstorming ways to eliminate illegal parking lots and crack down on people abusing the system and parking their cars for free in the Uptown and Southern Peninsula.
Councillor Gerry Lowe is spearheading the initiative and now there are five parking lots facing legal action for not cooperating with the city.
Lowe says the Peel Plaza parking garage currently has over 300 vacant parking spots and says more competitive prices need to be looked at to avoid the constant deficit every year. The Parking Commission has a deficit of 600 thousand dollars.
The City Manager will present a report to Common Council on October 13th to identify how to move forward with the initiative.
Councillor Shirley MacAlary says if the city doesn’t need the Peel Plaza parking garage then it should be sold.
MacAlary says a lot of people who work uptown can’t afford the prices the Peel Plaza parking garage charges when private lots ask one third of the price.
