Common Council Supports Roadmap For Smart Growth

Common Council voted in favour of adopting a roadmap for smart growth.

Mayor Don Darling says the goals are to grow the population, employment and the tax base here in the city.

Darling says he thinks this roadmap represents what citizens want.

He says the city will put new energy into population growth by partnering with the Human Development Council to put resources behind population growth in city hall.

On tax base growth, Darling says the city will work with all the various groups that work on real estate including industrial parks, Saint John Development corp, and the city’s own real estate services.

He says the city will look to align those groups for better results for taxpayers.

Very little information was provided and the roadmap document was not even included in the agenda.

Mayor Don Darling and the Growth Committee will hold a briefing later this afternoon to offer more information surrounding the newly adopted roadmap.

Councillors Greg Norton and Gary Sullivan voted against the roadmap because they feel it should include a property tax cut.
