Common Front For Social Justice Pleased With Federal Liberal Budget

The Common Front for Social Justice are pleased with the first federal Liberal budget.

Spokesperson Jean Claude Basque says the changes to EI are particularly good for low income workers and people living in poverty.

Those changes include reducing the number of weeks to qualify for EI, and lowering the waiting period for collecting EI.

He adds seniors living alone will also receive increased financial support.

“People that are on social assistance, when they change from social assistance to old age pension, this is going to help them a lot getting more revenue in their pocket,” says Basque.

Basque says there’s good news as well for the many thousands of families on the waitlist for social housing, with significant investments planned by the feds, adding NB Housing apartments are getting older and in need of renovation.

“Let’s hope that the provincial government could get some of this money to renovate these apartments but also build new ones,” says Basque.

Overall, Basque says it is a pleasant change that this government is more interventionist and wants to intervene in the economy and put more money in people’s pockets.
