The city manager will be looking into whether the contractors and sub-contractors for the $216-million clean drinking water project will give first consideration to Saint Johners when hiring.
That motion brought forward by Ward 3 councillor Gerry Lowe and was passed by Common Council. “I think that would be great if the City Manager can, somehow, encourage these non-union and union companies to hire local people first,” says Lowe.
150 people will be hired during the construction phase of this project. The project moved into the design and construction phase this month and is being carried out by a consortium of companies chosen by council called Port City Water Partners which will build and operate the water treatement plant for 30 years after it’s finished in November of 2018.
