UPDATE: Man Fatally Struck By Vehicle On Route 1

Mounties say one person has died after they were struck by a vehicle on Route 1 west of Saint John.

RCMP Sgt. Jean-Francois Martel said officers were called to the scene near Lepreau around 6:30 a.m. Friday.

“The driver indicated she was getting on the highway, and it was still dark at the time, and as she was progressing onto the highway, she didn’t see but there was a person that appeared to be a hitchhiker all dressed in black and she hit that person,” said Martel.

Martel said the victim, a 28-year-old man, died from their injuries. The driver of the vehicle was shaken up but not physically hurt, he said.

Route 1 eastbound was closed for several hours but re-opened by 11:30 a.m. Friday.

The cause of the collision remains under investigation, said Martel.
