Cream of the Crop: December 2019’s Top Streaming Titles

With the end of the year fast approaching, many film and television series will only be available on Netflix and Crave TV until the end of the month. Luckily, the holidays give audiences the perfect excuse to watch December 2019’s top streaming options and the limited streaming titles with one’s friends and family at ho-ho-home.

Netflix

1.) Steel Magnolias (1989) – December 1st

A young beautician, (Daryl Hannah, Blade Runner) is welcomed into fold of a close-knit group of women (Sally Field, Dolly Parton, Shirley MacLaine, Olympia Dukakis, Julia Roberts) in Northwestern Louisiana.

2.) The Greatest Showman (2017) – December 1st

Hugh Jackman as P.T. Barnum is the literal and figurative ringmaster of the 2017 musical phenomenon, which captured audiences’ ears and hearts with inescapably catchy songs and the message of being accepting all people and oneself.

3.) Titanic (1997) – December 1st

James Cameron crafted a love story of two star-crossed lovers, Jack and Rose (Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet), who meet on the doomed ocean liner that will go, on and on and on.

4.) Baby Mama (2008) – December 4th

Tina Fey and Amy Poehler bring their dynamic chemistry cultivated during their SNL days as a successful, single business woman who wants to become a mother and the low-class, quirky woman she hires to be her surrogate.

5.) How The Grinch Stole Christmas (2000) – December 4th

Ron Howard (A Beautiful Mind) pulled off a Christmas miracle bringing to life Whoville in the live-action film of Dr. Seuss’ holiday classic tale, while Jim Carrey transforms into the green, furry.

6.) Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle (2017) – December 5th

Four sullen, disparate teenagers find themselves trapped as video game player characters (Dwayne Johnson, Jack Black, Kevin Hart, Karen Gillan) in a retro Jumanji video game and must work together to win the game – or be forever trapped.

7.) Marriage Story (2019) – December 6th

Noah Baumbach’s (Frances Ha) draws upon his own personal divorce experience in a wincingly accurate, yet fully rounded, tale of a bicoastal acrimonious divorce and child custody battle between an off-Broadway director (Adam Driver) and actress (Scarlett Johansson).

8.) The Two Popes (2019) – December 20th

Within the Vatican walls the conservative Pope Benedict XVI (Anthony Hopkins, The Silence of the Lambs) and the liberal future Pope Francis (Jonathan Pryce, Game of Thrones) attempt to find common ground in order to bring the Catholic Church into the future.

9.) The Witcher (2019-) – December 20th

In the adaptation of Andrzej Sapkowski’s enormously popular fantasy novels Henry Cavill, (Man of Steel) plays Geralt of Rivia, a monster hunter struggling to find his place in a cruel world who is thrust, but whose destiny becomes intertwined with a sorceress and a princess with a hidden secret.

10.) You (season 2) (2018-) – December 26th

While on a trip in Los Angeles, serial killer Joe Goldberg, (Penn Badgley, Gossip Girl) cultivates his latest romantic obsession, aspiring chef Love Quinn, (Victoria Pedretti, The Haunting of Hill House) while attempting to evade the buried bodies of his past.

Crave TV

1.) A Christmas Carol (1951) – December 1st (Crave+Movies+HBO)

Charles Dickins’ beloved Christmas tale goes old school with its black-and-white adaptation and enthralling performance by London West End legend Alastair Sim as the Ebeneezer Scrooge – bah humbug!

2.) The Family Stone (2005) – December 1st (Starz Programming)

Tensions are high when Manhattan executive Everett Stone (Dermot Mulroney) brings home his girlfriend (Sarah Jessica Parker) to introduce her to his family (Diane Keaton, Craig T. Nelson, Rachel McAdams) and with the intention of proposing.

3.) Home Alone (1990) / Home Alone 2 (1992) – December 1st (Crave+Movies+HBO)

The adventures of Kevin McAllister, (Macaulay Culkin) and bumbling thieves and punching bags Harry and Marv (Joe Pesci, Daniel Stern), directed by Chris Columbus, are a one-two punch of holiday nostalgia that still hold up nearly thirty years later.

4.) Love Actually (2003) – December 1st (Crave+Movies+HBO)

Richard Curtis’ (Four Weddings and a Funeral) holiday treatise on the power of love is still as charming as ever, despite some parts not aging well, with the powerhouse cast of characters (Alan Rickman, Emma Thompson, Hugh Grant, Keira Knightley, Colin Firth, Liam Neeson, Bill Nighy, Andrew Lincoln, Martin Freeman, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Laura Linney) enacting a Christmas version of six degrees of separation.

5.) Work In Progress (season 1) (2019-) – December 8th (weekly)

Chicago comedian Abby McEnany plays a 45-year old self-identified fat, queer lesbian who enters into a vibrant relationship after an unexpected loss.

6.) Fast Colour (2019) – December 19th (Crave+Movies+HBO)

A young woman with superhuman abilities (Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Belle) returns home to the family she abandoned years before after she was forced to go on the run.

7.) Shazam! (2019) – December 26th (Crave+Movies+HBO)

After being gifted mysterious powers, fourteen year old foster kid Billy Batson, (Asher Angel, Andi Mack) can transform into the adult superhero Shazam, (Zachary Levi, Chuck). as most teenage boys would do if they were an adult with superpowers, Billy posts his exploits on YouTube, buys beer for himself and his foster brother Freddy, (Jack Dylan Grazer, It), but has to learn responsibility in the face of evil.

8.) Red Joan (2019) – December 27th (Crave+Movies+HBO)

Inspired by real life spy exploits of British civil servant Melita Norwood, the grandmotherly Joan Stanley, (Dame Judi Dench) is revealed to be the KGB’s longest-serving British spy. However, nothing about spy work is black or white, as Joan learns as a young woman (Sophie Cookson, Kingsman: The Secret Service)

9.) Night At The Museum trilogy (2006, 2009, 2014) – December 27th (Starz Programming)

Ben Stiller plays museum nightwatchman Larry Davey, who discovers the Museum of Natural History’s exhibits come to life at night. Over the course of Larry’s adventures, an enormous cast actors play the nocturnally animated figures, including Robin Williams, Owen Wilson, Rami Malek, Mickey Rooney, Amy Adams, Hank Azaria, Jon Bernthal, Bill Hader, Dan Stevens and Ben Kingsley.

10.) Superman (1978) – December 27th (Starz Programming)

Christopher Reeves sets the golden standard for Superman depictions in film as both the last Kryptonian and mild-manner Clark Kent, who must juggle his job as a reporter alongside Lois Lane, (Margot Kidder) while protecting humanity with his powers from from evildoers such as Lex Luthor, (Gene Hackman).
