Saint John Mayor Don Darling is touting the benefits of amalgamation once again, this time during his State of the City address.
Darling says Saint John pays the majority of the bills yet we don’t have the majority of the tax base, and that means the city has to compete with the outlying areas and he doesn’t really want that.
“How do we come together and re-negotiate a new mutually beneficial deal that has us be a superpower the largest regional municipality in New Brunswick,” says Darling.

Darling also waded into election waters about voter preference for residents.
“I’ll be blunt, if the people of Saint John election any candidate in the city or the greater Saint John area that has not made firm commitments to a more sustainable Saint John we’re going to fail ourselves,” stated Darling.
Darling also told the audience that the city is getting its finances in order but admitted it has a long way to go on that front.
