A potential flooding fix for the water-weary residents of Darling Island, N.B. may be finished soon.
Work on the realignment of Darlings Island Road by the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure and its contractor began in July.
Engineer in Training Mike Steadman says the road itself has been raised up by two metres on average in most areas.
He says they hope the slope protection will help mitigate the flooding that cuts off residents every spring.
“As you see in places around the world, you never know what Mother Nature can bring, we are pretty confident this is definitely gonna do its job.” Steadman said.

Steadman tells us they anticipate the work will be finished by the end of October.
“A conservative estimate, I would say, is the end of the month to have it chip sealed and everything but, I’m really hoping we can get it done before that. It becomes more and more challenging as the weather becomes more and more unpredictable.” Steadman said.
Steadman says the road design factored in water coming in from both from the Hammond River and Darlings Island Lake.
