Develop Saint John has only been around since January but it already has some pretty ambitious goals.
Francis Power is the organization’s chair and talked about some of them during a recent council meeting.
“One is we want to increase the tax base by $75 million this year, and so that’s new investments in the community that amount to $75 million,” says Power. “Secondly is that we want to have a 2 to 1 return on investment.”
Coun. Blake Armstrong says Develop SJ is “one of the best things” to come out of the city’s growth committee. He says we have to get the word out that positive things are happening in the city.

Mayor Don Darling says that’s exactly what this city needs.
“What we needed most is tax base growth,” says Darling, “and we now have a tax base SWAT team that’s focused on tax base.”
This year’s priorities include leading the process for the new Southern Peninsula school and continuing talks about a possible casino.
