Cyclists across the province are expecting good news from the New Brunswick legislature next week, when the issue of changes to cycling laws is discussed.
Hundreds of cyclists held rallies across the province on New Years Day, in support of Ellen’s Law, in a push to see changes made, to keep cyclists safer.
Organizer for Ellen’s Law Cathy Manuel says they were thrilled to hear that provincial politicians have jumped onboard and have moved this along so quickly, “I do believe that it is going to be early next week. I think the budget is going to be tabled first on Tuesday and then it will be sometime after that. We need motorists to know to be aware that cyclists have a right to be on the street and motorists need to give the space and respect to cyclists.”
Ellen’s One Metre Law was created after the death of well known cyclist Ellen Watters in Sussex in December.
It calls for several changes including one metre of space, when motorists are passing cyclists.
A petition for Ellen’s Law has also been circulating since early last month, and so far, over 4700 signatures have been collected.
