The Vitalité Health Network says it is “deeply concerned” about the spread of COVID-19 in the Edmundston region.
Officials said over the weekend that the Edmundston Regional Hospital will soon reach its maximum capacity in terms of patients requiring acute care.
Dr. France Desrosier, president and CEO of the health authority, said the transfer of patients to other facilities is “imminent.”
“The evolution of the variant and its atypical behaviours are creating problems that exceed the pessimistic projections that had been made for that region,” Desrosier said in a statement Saturday.
As of Sunday, there were 15 people in the hospital across the province with COVID-19, and seven of them were in an intensive care unit.
But Desrosier said she remains confident the region will get to the other side of this outbreak.
“We are fortunate to have amazing teams who possess an expertise that is second to none,” she said. “We have been successful in overcoming the hardships and obstacles of COVID-19 so far, and I am confident that we will continue doing so until the end.”
The health network is asking those who are eligible to get vaccinated as soon as possible.
