Emergency Shelter Offered To Stranded PEI Bound Motorists

After high winds and blowing and drifting snow forced the closure of the Confederation Bridge yesterday afternoon, about 100 PEI bound motorists were left stranded.

An emergency shelter was set up last night on the New Brunswick side of the Bridge.

A team of Canadian Red Cross volunteers and staff from Moncton and Shediac brought in cots, blankets and other emergency supplies for an overnight shelter, set up at the East Botsford Recreation Centre, on Trenholm Road, about two-and-a-half kilometres west of the bridge.

Authorities notified travellers who were parked in cars along the highway and recommended that for their safety and comfort, they relocate to the shelter, and most opted to do so.

The Confederation Bridge reopened early this morning.
