Emissions Of Ash Raising Questions Of Public Health

Who’s looking out for the public?………That question being asked by clean air activist Gordon Dalzell in light of a report by Reuters on excessive emissions of an ash like dust in Saint John since 2010 from the oil refinery.

Dalzell says the Environment Department received reports of the incidents and the Health Department even considered doing a study of the impacts but that was never done.

The Conservation Council of New Brunswick reported back in 2009 that lung cancer rates in Saint John were higher than both the national and provincial averages.

The provincial environment department has sent us an email saying it’s aware of the issue and is working towards ensuring the company is taking the necessary steps to operate within its approval limits and to minimize environmental impacts.

We also reached out to Irving Oil but did not receive a response to our request for comment.
