SUMMARY:Loyalist Day May 18 Celebrations
DESCRIPTION:The celebration of the arrival of the United Empire Loyalists at the mouth of the St. John River in 1783 and the incorporation of the City of Saint John in 1785\, Loyalist Day May 18 is a collective effort of a host of community partners who share a dedication to preserving and promoting our region’s rich history and heritage. \nWe are pleased to present our 2026 Loyalist Day – May 18th Schedule Of Events in Saint John\, New Brunswick. \n10:00 AM MUSKETRY SALUTE FROM PORTLAND POINT\nJoin us at Place Fort La Tour as the soldiers of DeLancey’s Brigade fire a welcoming volley honouring the first Loyalist newcomers who stepped ashore on this date in 1783. Place Fort La Tour will be open to the public free of charge between 10 and 11 am to help us kick-off Loyalist Day.\n>>> Location: Place Fort La Tour\, Portland Point on Harbour Passage\n…\n10:00 AM – 2:00 PM EXPLORE YOUR HISTORY\nVisit our ‘research hub’ at the Saint John Arts Centre and discover how easy it is to explore the history of your family and your community with the excellent resources available right here in New Brunswick. Join representatives from the NB Genealogical Society\, the United Empire Loyalists Association\, the NB Provincial Archives and the Collections Department at Kings Landing.\n>>> Location: Port Saint John Gallery\, Saint John Arts Centre\, 20 Peel Plaza\n…\n10:00 AM – 2:00 PM THE LOYALIST LEGACY\nGreeted by a nearly barren wilderness when they stepped ashore in 1783\, the Loyalist refugees would set about creating a new home for themselves\, building a city and a province along the way. Visit Stone Church and learn more about what they accomplished in the generation that followed. Staff from Kings Landing along with local interpreters will be on hand to discuss the settling of the St. John River Valley\, notable female Loyalists\, the Churches of the Loyalists (why is it called Stone Church?) and more.\n>>> Location: St. John’s ‘Stone’ Church\, 87 Carleton Street\n…\n10:00 AM – 3:00 PM A LOYALIST HOME\nJoin us for an open house at the Loyalist House Museum – a home built by David Daniel Merritt\, who arrived as a Loyalist in 1783 – and talk with interpreters and historical re-enactors from DeLancey’s Brigade about day-to-day life in the period. Free admission – donations accepted.\n>>> Location: Loyalist House\, 120 Union Street\n…\n10:20 AM PORTLAND POINT 1783\nA rocky point of land situated where the river meets the harbour\, Portland Point has perhaps more history per square foot than any other piece of real estate in the region. Join us for a brief talk on what was happening here in 1783 and the role it played in the evolution of the area.\n>>> Location: Place Fort La Tour\, Portland Point on Harbour Passage\n…\n12:30 PM WREATH LAYING CEREMONY\nUnited Empire Loyalists’ Association of Canada – NB Chapter and the troops of DeLancey’s Brigade will hold a brief ceremony at the earliest known grave in the Loyalist Burial Ground to honour the memory of those whose sacrifice and determination laid the foundations of our city.\n>>> Location: Loyalist Burial Ground\, Sydney Street at King Street East\n…\n12:45 PM WALK THE OLD BURIAL GROUND\nImmediately following the wreath laying ceremony take a guided walk through the cemetery with local historian and author David Goss. Meet at the Sydney Street Gate.\n>>> Location: Loyalist Burial Ground\, Sydney Street at King Street East\n…\n2:00 PM – 3:30 PM 1776 – KEYBOARD MUSIC FROM THE LIBRARY OF THOMAS JEFFERSON\nTim Blackmore\, on the square piano\, offers a concert of period music from 250 years ago. Freewill offering in support of the Early Music Studio Of Saint John.\n>>> Location: Saint John Arts Centre\, 20 Peel Plaza \nDownload a printable version: https://tinyurl.com/2s4a55sd

SUMMARY:RHS Relay For Life event

Relay For Life is a community celebration that honours survivors\, remembers loved ones\, and supports those currently facing cancer\, all while raising vital funds for life-saving research and support programs. \n\nA key part of the event is participants walking the track together throughout the day\, symbolizing the ongoing journey of those affected by cancer and showing that no one faces it alone.\n \nThis year\, our goal is to raise $10\,000 in support of the Canadian Cancer Society\, helping to fund groundbreaking research\, patient services\, and advocacy efforts across the country.\n \nThe event will take place May 16th from 10am-6pm @ the Rothesay Commons and will be filled with energy\, hope\, and plenty of fun for all ages. Families can enjoy a wide range of activities including bouncy castles\, face painting\, water games\, and more\, making it a day that brings the whole community together for an important cause.\n \nParticipants are required to register in advance through the event website\, so be sure to sign up and secure your spot.\n \nJoin us as we take our first steps as a community in this powerful movement—celebrating strength\, supporting one another\, and making a difference.

SUMMARY:Birding South Musquash Marsh with Susanne Bonnell
DESCRIPTION:S Musquash Marsh 26 S Musquash Road\, Musquash \nThe South Musquash Marsh is a small portion of the NBCC Musquash Estuary Marine Protected Area. The area we will be visiting has been part of the Maritime Marsh Monitoring program for several years and is checked each year for American bittern\, Least Bittern\, Pied-billed Grebe\, Sora\, Virginia rail\, American Coot\, Common Gallinule\, Nelson’s Sparrow\, Marsh Wren\, Black Tern and Willet. \nThe plan is to bird the woodland trail to the marsh but not stopping over long just practicing our listening skills in preparation for our time on the marsh. \nTo maximize the experience on this trip there will be no electronic callings or phishing. \nThe quieter the group can be while we are on the marsh\, the more likely we are to hear and see some of the above marsh birds but also the other numerous birds that inhabit any marsh. \nThe walking surface is flat\, however; it can be muddy in spots and may have some sinkholes once we are out on the marsh berm.

SUMMARY:Harm Reduction Symposium
DESCRIPTION:8th Annual Harm Reduction SymposiumMay 13th from 10:00 AM – 4:15 PM (ZOOM) \nThe Harm Reduction Symposium will bring together many stakeholders to raise awareness\, educate\, and enhance harm reduction collaboration. \nThis year’s symposium\, “It’s Time to Listen\,” is about ending stigma and elevate the voices of people with lived experience. We will provide a platform from people who use substances\, their families\, and those who support them. They will share their struggles\, strength\, and success stories. \nWe will highlight voices from Indigenous communities and talk about the need for better in-patient policies to support people in care. We will also share stories that put a human face on this crisis and show how outreach programs are bringing health care to people who face unfair health gaps. \nWe recognize the people affected by substance use and the workers who help reduce harm and save lives.\nSubstance use disorder is a health issue—not a moral failure. Laws and health policies must reflect this. Harm reduction should be a top priority for the public\, leaders\, and health workers. We need better public education\, stronger health care training\, teamwork across professions\, and creative community programs. It’s time to work together and build a more connected and caring system. \nYou will hear about real programs that reduce stigma and make a difference—from grassroots efforts to team-based care models. These examples show what is possible when harm reduction is at the center of care. Let’s create real change together\, where harm reduction is a foundation of care for everyone. \nBecause of our generous sponsors Abbvie\, Gilead and Horizon Health Network\, the event is free. Donations are welcome and will go to local harm reduction projects in New Brunswick through Avenue B Inc. The event will offer English and French closed captioning for better access.
