Ex-swim instructor facing 66 sex charges in N.S. makes 1st court appearance

The ex-swim instructor who is facing 66 historical sexual assault charges made his first court appearance, Tuesday, according to the province’s prosecution service.

Douglas Williams, 75, from Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, worked at the Nova Scotia Youth Centre in Waterville between 1989 and 2015.

The investigation into the case is called Operation Headwind.

It involved interviewing more than 450 survivors and witnesses across Canada, reviewing over 9,800 documents seized and more than 1,200 tasks.

Charges include:

  • Sexual Assault Causing Bodily Harm (3 counts)
  • Sexual Assault (28 counts)
  • Sexual Exploitation (32 counts)
  • Sexual Interference
  • Invitation to Sexual Touching
  • Assault

The offences will proceed at the next court appearance scheduled for October 21.
