Female Rapids Battle Through Tough Weekend, Continue Building Toward Future Success

Every season has weekends that test a team’s resolve, and for the Saint John Rapids female team, this past weekend was exactly that.

Facing two very different challenges in consecutive days, the Rapids showed determination, competitiveness, and an unwavering commitment to one another as they took on ECJLL opposition in a pair of hard-fought contests. While the results didn’t fall in Saint John’s favour, the weekend provided further evidence of the growth taking place within a program that continues to move forward with confidence and purpose.

Saturday’s matchup was the type of game that reminds everyone why lacrosse can be such an unpredictable sport.

From the opening faceoff, the Rapids and their opponents were locked in a battle where neither side could gain a significant advantage. Momentum swung repeatedly throughout the contest, with both teams generating scoring opportunities and responding whenever the other appeared ready to pull ahead.

The Rapids played one of their most complete games of the season. Defensively, they were organized and aggressive, limiting quality scoring chances and forcing their opponents to work for every opportunity. In transition, Saint John moved the ball effectively and consistently created offensive pressure.

Most importantly, the Rapids never stopped believing they could win. Kiley Brow led the offence with 2 goals and one assist. Stella Grant scored mid-way through the third period to bring the game within one goal. In the final minute of the game, Rian Deakin lit the lamp, only to have it called back for too many players on the floor. A penalty shot then fell to Halifax which resulted in a late goal and an 8-6 victory for the Hurricanes.

The narrow defeat was disappointing, but it was also a game that demonstrated how close the Rapids are to turning strong performances into victories against quality opponents.

If Saturday tested the team’s ability to compete in a tight contest, Sunday presented an entirely different challenge.

The Rapids squared off against one of the ECJLL’s strongest and most experienced teams, a squad that has established itself within the league. Facing that caliber of opponent is never easy, particularly on the second day of a weekend series and a short bench, but the Rapids embraced the opportunity.

Rather than being intimidated by the challenge, Saint John came out determined to compete and measure itself against one of the league’s elite programs.

The opposition’s experience and depth were evident throughout the game, but the Rapids continued to battle hard from beginning to end. There were stretches where Saint John generated strong offensive pressure and moments where the team’s defensive structure frustrated one of the league’s most potent attacks. The effort level never wavered.

Throughout the weekend, the team received contributions from every area of the roster. Veteran players provided leadership during difficult moments, younger players gained valuable experience against quality competition, and the goaltending unit once again came through with key saves under pressure. Madelyn Casford and Olivia Allen each scored for the Rapids, leading the offensive charge.

Perhaps the biggest takeaway from the weekend was the continued evolution of the team. Earlier in the season, the Rapids showed they could earn important victories. This weekend demonstrated something equally important: their ability to remain competitive against strong opposition and continue learning through every challenge.

As the second half of the season approaches, the Rapids can take confidence from the progress they have made. The team continues to gain experience, strengthen its identity, and establish the habits that will serve the program well in the future.
