Fire at former St. Michael’s Convent in Miramichi

An abandoned building in Miramichi, slated for demolition in the coming weeks, has been destroyed by fire.

The fire in the former convent at 14 Howard Street was reported yesterday afternoon.

Miramichi Fire says they arrived to find a large fire in the building.

Firefighters quickly switched to defensive mode because of the danger inside the building and began fighting the flames from the outside.

Efforts were reduced after several hours due to the high volume of water use, putting a strain on the municipal water system. At one point, firefighters were using approximately 3000 gallons of water per minute.

They remained on scene into Sunday night.

No word on a cause yet.

Miramichi MLA Michelle Conroy stated on social media that they have been fighting for the past week to stop the demolition of this incredible building, “We spoke to the Diocese and planned to post contact info for the public to help us request a pause so we could get a plan together.”
