Fire Damages West Saint John Home

Five people have been forced from their home after a blaze in west Saint John, according to fire officials.

Emergency crews were called to Kingsville Road, off Milford Road, around 4:30 p.m. Thursday.

Platoon Chief Josh Hennessy said the fire started in the basement of the home but extended into the first floor and attic space.

“It was verified through a primary search that all occupants were in fact clear and safe,” Hennessy said.

“One civilian was treated on scene for smoke inhalation and was not transported to hospital.”

All five people forced from the home are receiving help from the Canadian Red Cross, he said.

Hennessy said power had to be disconnected from the home following the fire.

“A fire investigation is currently taking place at this time,” he said.

More than 20 fire department personnel were on the scene for about five hours, said Hennessy.

The Canadian Red Cross says it has arranged emergency lodging and funds to buy food, clothing, and other basics for a man and four children, ranging in age from seven to 16.
