Fire destroys one of two gas stations in St. Martins

An early morning fire in St. Martins has destroyed an Irving gas station on Main Street which also included a convenience store and a pizza takeout.

Fundy-St. Martins mayor Jim Bedford says the loss is a blow to the community since it was one of two gas stations and the only one which sold propane and diesel.

Firefighters were called to the scene around 6:10 a.m. Saturday and it took several hours to put out the flames.

Bedford says crews from various communities assisted the St. Martins Fire Department including Simonds, Upham, Hampton and Nauwigewauk.

No injuries were reported.

Local residents provided food for the firefighters at the community centre.

Bedford says the cause of the fire is not yet known.

The provincial fire marshal’s office has been called in to help investigate.
