Firefighter Injured Battling Weekend Fire

One Saint John firefighter was taken to the hospital with minor injuries while battling a house fire over the weekend.

Emergency crews were called to the 2800 block of Golden Grove Road around 8 a.m. Sunday.

Platoon Chief Josh Hennessy with the Saint John Fire Department said crews faced extremely icy roads on the way to the scene.

“The first arriving apparatus reported heavy smoke and fire coming from multiple areas of the structure,” said Hennessy.

“There was an initial interior attack performed, however, conditions deteriorated quickly and it was determined that a defensive operation would be most appropriate.”

Hennessy said a tanker truck from the Kennebecasis Valley Fire Department joined two tankers from Saint John to help shuttle water to the scene, which was in an area with no fire hydrants.

He said everyone inside the home made it out unharmed, while the injured firefighter was later released from the hospital.

Crews were on the scene for about three hours, said Hennessy.

There is no word yet on what caused the fire.
