Friday’s snowstorm brought many challenges for emergency services in the Saint John area.
Saint John firefighters responded to a medical call on Pitt Street involving a seven-year-old child around 8:30 p.m.
Platoon Chief Steve Voutour said firefighters had to carry the child to a waiting ambulance on Union Street.
“The ambulance couldn’t make it up Pitt Street so the crews from the Engine 1 transported the individual from 29 Pitt Street to Giant Tiger,” Voutour said.
Voutour said the biggest issue on Friday was mobility, with most of their equipment getting stuck at some point.
He said the crews working on Friday needed help from the city’s Public Works crews because of the blowing and drifting snow.
Voutour said Brian Wilson was the platoon chief on duty during Friday’s storm.
“[Platoon Chief] Wilson was able to give one of our radios to one of the managers from [public] works so we could coordinate between the two more readily,” Voutour said.
During the heaviest part of the storm, Voutour said Priority 1 streets were “pretty much” the only ones being cleared on a regular basis.
“That’s where the ambulance would have been located for this particular call. It was on a Priority 1 roadway but couldn’t make it onto a Priority 2 roadway,” Voutour said.
