First Arriving Police Constables Testify About Murder Scene

Two Saint John police officers who arrived first at Richard Oland’s office on the day his body was found testifying at Dennis Oland’s second-degree murder trial.

Constable Duane Squires was asked by the Crown’s Jill Knee to remember the morning of July 7th 2011.

He responded to a call about a man who was not conscious and not breathing at 52 Canterbury Street. He was joined by Constable Trinda McAlduff who was a cadet at the time.

The officers parked across the street and entered the building and as he walked up the stairs he could smell the distinct smell of death.

He described it as a pungent odour. When asked by the Crown’s Jill Knee if he had smelled it before that year and he responds, yes.

Constable Squires notices a deceased man on the floor. There is a gash on the man’s head and a lot of coagulated blood.

Constable Trinda McAlduff was asked to try and located Richard Oland’s green BMW which she did in a parking lot at the corner of Princess and Canterbury streets.

Later in the day, Squires and others assisted in the removal of Richard Oland’s body from 52 Canterbury Street.
