Former MLA, cabinet minister named Canada’s newest senator

A former New Brunswick Liberal MLA and cabinet minister has been named the country’s next senator.

Victor Boudreau was appointed as an independent senator by the governor general, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced late Friday.

“Mr. Boudreau’s experience in a broad range of portfolios will be a great benefit to the Senate,” Trudeau said in a statement.

“I am confident that he will continue to be a strong voice for New Brunswick, Atlantic Canada, and Canadians from coast to coast to coast.”

Boudreau was an MLA in the Shediac area for more than a decade, from 2004 to 2018.

He held several cabinet portfolios, including health and finance, and served as opposition leader.

Boudreau currently works as the chief administrative officer of the Town of Shediac.

The newest senator fills a vacancy left when Percy Mockler retired this spring.
