A Declaration of Trust dating back to 1826 compels the city to preserve the historic Sydney Street Courthouse and not allow it to be torn down.
That word comes from John Barry, a past president of the Saint John Law Society. He says the courthouse could be renovated and used as a muncipal council chambers.
He says one of the options that can be considered is using the other land on King Street East in behind and attaching it into the courthouse and using the courtroom as the council chamber.
Barry says regardless of how the building is used in the future, the Law Society argues its facade must be maintained. He’s suggesting a citizens committee be formed.
